Hiromi Shirai

While Shirai studied in England she saw performance art for the first time. Since 1998 she has performed in Japan. People often ask her "What is Performance Art?". Without giving a precise answer back, she explained her activities in many different places and circumstances. Kenichi Higashino’s life work is the practice of ‘Patua’: a master of the picture scroll. The origin of the painted scroll is very ancient. Nowadays this art form is still used, mainly in the West Bengal and Bihar states of India. In Bengali, "Pat" means "scroll" and "Patua" means "Painter". The Patua is a kind of minstrel. He goes from village to village, with a bag containing several scrolls. He gathers together the villagers around him and unrolls his paintings, never showing more than two or three images at a time, and he sings the painted story. The story is shown in sequence, like a story board or a comic strip. In this way the Patua earns his living.

He also composes stage music for modern ballet, and original music for film and video games. Christopher is also a member of floatingroom, a collaborative musical partnership with Bun Ito.

MADONAld

maDonald was, and is the singer from Three Day Stubble, cult nerd rock originators from San Francisco, and also performs in Kyoto as Naked Mozart, and in Ooh My Cow. Donald will be performing solo for this event and without attempting to dampen... or raise your expectations, in the interpretive performance world of "AVI", you may well witness ..... extreme gurning, garbled glossolalia, big raw physical gestures, a helping of anger and angst, mixed with a large dose of scatalogical rock and roll and quite possibly some tearful enka.
