Hiromi Shirai

While Shirai studied in England she saw performance art for the first time. Since 1998 she has performed in Japan. People often ask her "What is Performance Art?". Without giving a precise answer back, she explained her activities in many different places and circumstances. She recently started involving elements of improvisation or collaboration with other artists in her performances. For now she is happy enough to give some sort of surprise - rather than a certain answer to that question to the audience.

Sseeaann Rrooee (UK)

UK born Kyoto resident Sseeaann Rrooee (aka Sean Roe) is a Multimedia/Performance artist and Musician who performs on Electronic Trumpet, Bass and Flute , also utilizing triggered samples and effects. When DJing (as DJ AFRIphoniCAAAA) he plays an unusual mix of Afrobeat./Artrock/ NDW/Krautrock/Musique Concrete, Soundtrack, Sound Art, Industrial Music and quirky underground music

Kenichi Higashino’s life work is the practice of ‘Patua’: a master of the picture scroll. The origin of the painted scroll is very ancient. Nowadays this art form is still used, mainly in the West Bengal and Bihar states of India. In Bengali, "Pat" means "scroll" and "Patua" means "Painter". The Patua is a kind of minstrel. He goes from village to village, with a bag containing several scrolls. He gathers together the villagers around him and unrolls his paintings, never showing more than two or three images at a time, and he sings the painted story. The story is shown in sequence, like a story board or a comic strip. In this way the Patua earns his living.

Christopher Fryman Is a trumpeter specializing in electronica applications to the trumpet sound, effects and delays. He also composes stage music for modern ballet, and original music for film and video games. Christopher is also a member of floatingroom, a collaborative musical partnership with Bun Ito.

S.C.Fis the duo Andy Couzens and Michael J. Migliacci. They are a multimedia act that explores the interface between electronic sounds and Video, often collaborating with dancers or other musicians. For tonights show they will be making a video for Psychedelic Desert as well as performing as S.C.F.

Armelle Dousset has been on a whirlwind tour of Japan, enthralling audiences here with her accordion playing and dance performances. Armelle has returned to France, but she has left us with a Dance/Video Performance piece which we will screen at tonights event.

MADONAld

maDonald was, and is the singer from Three Day Stubble, cult nerd rock originators from San Francisco, and also performs in Kyoto as Naked Mozart, and in Ooh My Cow. Donald will be performing solo for this event and without attempting to dampen... or raise your expectations, in the interpretive performance world of "AVI", you may well witness ..... extreme gurning, garbled glossolalia, big raw physical gestures, a helping of anger and angst, mixed with a large dose of scatalogical rock and roll and quite possibly some tearful enka.
